Life as a Soldier

Long goodbyes
People cry
Soldiers are leaving, there last moments fly
Don’t want to let go knowing that they might die
You say you will be back, though that might be a lie
One last look at your family with tears in your eyes

Get your gun, your boots, your bag
Say goodbye to your prideful flag
Ready to fight for your country, stay alive, and stay glad
Don’t forget what you’re fighting for even when times get bad

Blood, mud, and rain
You’re done, your cold, and filled with pain
Don’t give up, remember all that you will gain
Your future, your family, your new life in fame
Be a hero, don’t die, don’t lose, don’t live your life in shame
Your best friend is dead, you long to get home, and yourself is to blame

It’s like walking into the bloody gates of hell
Bombs, bullets, you rather be rotting in a jail cell
You run, you shoot, soldiers yell
Descent, despair, you think you may die of the smell

You’re starving and dirty, wishing to see the suns forgotten glow
Weapons and fellow soldiers lying breathless row by row
Jump down; go hide in the trenches below
They aim, they fire one last blow
You’re on your back, watching your blood slowly flow
You’re dead; you’re free, now you can go…
